Q: What does beauty mean to you?
Her: Well it can be external and internal. And it's perceived differently by each person. Beauty... can be a
feeling that makes you glow: when you see something beautiful you automatically feel in a certain way.
Him: It's the same feeling. I mean... you see something beautiful and you automatically feel good, and it's
ok, it's nice... it depends on how you perceive it.
Q: What is you standard of beauty? Who do you think it's beautiful?
Her: When I look at a person, I don't look at the way they dress, the way they look. I'm interested in their
interior. If you're beautiful on the inside, you're automatically beautiful on the outside.
Him: Yes, it automatically reflects.
Q: So you don't have names.
Her: No... because that's not what beauty is. Beauty.. it fades away.
Q: Do you think Bucharest is a beautiful city?
Her: It's one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen.
Him: Yes.. it offers a lot.. beautiful architecture... it's ok.
Her: People not so much, but it's ok.
Q: What do you like most about it?
Her: This park.. the old and particular places here. The Old Town... Herastrau Park..

El: Da.. are multe... arhitectura frumoasa... e ok.
Centrul vechi... Herastrau...

Elderly woman
Q: What does beauty mean to you?
A: It’s gone. I am 81, this month I will be 82.
Q: Do you not think of beauty anymore?
A: I used to be a beauty. I was Miss Severin, but ever since 1952 when I came to
University and stayed in Bucharest and got married, I stayed in education until
1988. I used to be like you, I left 30 generations behind.
Q: As a teacher?
A: Yes, as a teacher.
Q: What is the standard of beauty for you?
A: Now I have 800 pension. Like until the Revolution, when I got in after I got a
degree in Philosophy. I got retired with 300 lei, but those used to mean
something, not like now. Money used to have value.
Q: My grandmother is close to your age.
A: I was born in ’33.
Q: She was born in ’31.
A: She is older then, two years older, she’s born earlier.
Q: Yes.
A: Not “old”, it’s shameful to say “old”. My husband died 12 years ago and now I’m
coming back from one of my brothers, because my pension doesn’t arrive until the 19th
and he can help me with something.
Q: May he live long!
A: I don’t have children. I had plenty of children in school and I was a selfish woman.
The last 10 years I spent working in kindergarden, for a salary that was half a
teacher’s pay.
Q. Yeah, I know, I used to work in a kindergarden, as well.
A: And the Pension Law stated that you have to choose from your last 10 years the
last 5, and that destroyed me. Because I didn’t have a First Degree, and the Second
Degree I didn’t get, because I wasn’t a member of the [Communist] Party, and in
November when you filled in the application, they checked your papers. “You’re not a
member of the Party”, then in December when the result came in, they could not give
you the degree — “She’s not a member of the Party”, that’s what they used to say in
Ceau?escu’s time.
Q: Can I ask you…
A: Yes, love?
Q: …What is your standard in beauty today? I mean, I don’t know, perhaps an
example of a person you find beautiful, or a beautiful person nowadays, or just a
general description?
A: In what field?
Q: In any field, as a human being.
A: As a person? I don’t know… I never wore make-up, not even in front of the
children. I’m telling you, even if they paid me 10 times more, I would never go back
to teaching, because nowadays children don’t have any kind of respect towards a
mature person.
Q: So you don’t like people who wear make-up?
A: I don’t like the excentric types, it would have to be more natural, a pale pink on the
lips. But girls, I never wore make-up in my life, maybe, alright, when I went to the
Opera with my husband, or at a show somewhere, I would wear a light lipstick, so
that the husband wouldn’t be embarrassed, (laughs).
Q: Do you think of Bucharest as a beautiful city?
A: It is, but it’s not being taken care of, not at all.
Q: Why do you think it’s beautiful?
A: Hmm…
Q: What do you think it’s beautiful about it?
A: It should be more beautiful, but now nobody cares.
Q: What do you like about it then?
A: Everyone wants to accomplish their own goals, from the Mayor to… Look, believe
me, I don’t know who to vote with. I am like that character in Caragiale’s play, the
Tormented Citizen: “Who should I vote with?” I think you know the line, so…
Q: Can you tell me your first name?
A: Ileana.
Q: And you age?
A: 81, this month, on September 23.
Q: Thank you.
A: You’re welcome, you’re too sweet.

Femeie în vârsta
O. Ce înseamna frumuse?ea pentru dumneavoastra?
R. S-a dus.
înva?amânt pâna în '88 ?i... eram ?i eu... cândva ca voi. A? vrea sa mai fiu, 30 de
genera?ii am dus în spate.
O. Ca ?i profesoara?
Aveau valoare banii...
De 12 ani mi-a murit so?ul, ?i acum vin de
O. Da, ?tiu, ?i eu am lucrat în gradini?a.
R. ?i legea 3 a pensiilor prevedea a?a, sa-?i alegi din ultimii 10 ani, ultimii 5 ani ?i aia
m-a nenorocit.
Nu-i
Ca ?i om.
R. Ca ?i om?
O. Pute?i sa-mi spune?i numele mic?
R. Ileana.
O. ?i vârsta, 82? 81?
R. ’81, luna asta, septembrie, 23 septembrie.
O. OK, bine mul?umim frumos.
R. Cu placere, sunte?i prea dragu?e.

Q: What does beauty mean to you?
A: I don’t know, it seems to me that beauty is something that lays in every one of
us, and it is in the eye of the beholder, and maybe what is beautiful to me, and
that’s why I do not want to define it for you, it’s not the other way around as well.
I usually find beauty in simplicity.
Q: Who do you find beautiful?
A: I’m gonna say my mother, but it’s a bit too mainstream, and I will say that for
me anyone is beautiful as long as they have a beautiful way of thinking, or they
are a good person, and beauty is not as important as the character.
Q: Super-beautiful. Do you like Bucharest, does it strike you as beautiful?
A: Yes, I find it beautiful, a beautiful Capital for me. I love Romania, but for me
Romania, Bucharest do not necessarily mean the people, the politics, as much as
the places, the traditions, which we should value more than…
Q: …than problems.
A: Yes, and the young people who have a future here and are talented, but who
nobody cares about.

O. Super frumos. ?i Bucure?tiul î?i place, ?i se pare un ora? frumos?
iubesc ?ara asta — are ?i par?i proaste, dar pentru mine România, Bucure?tiul, nu sunt
neaparat oamenii, politica, cât sunt locurile, tradi?ia ?i ar trebui sa-i dam mai multa

Q: What does beauty mean to you?
A: On a girl, or...? Beauty... I've never thought about it.... I think I find beauty first of all in the things that
look good and beauty on a woman is especially when we're on the same page, we talk and we see that we
have things to talk about in common. And in that moment I see her differently, you know?
Q: Do you have a beauty standard? Do you think of anyone in particular?
A: Yes.. I have a saying: A man can look like the Devil, but a woman is not allowed. She has to have a
certain standard. A woman who doesn't takes care of herself really disgusts me. I mean you can stay like
that all your life, you need to take care of yourself, no matter how hard it is.
Q: Do you have someone beautiful in mind?
A: For example that actress from The Avengers, I can't remember her name. I find her very beautiful... and
stylish, and classy. And this is what I like about a woman: style and class. I also have beautiful classmates,
but of course, their heads are empty. It happens sometimes.
Q: Do you find Bucharest beautiful?
A: Honestly, no. Very much garbage, people don't really take care of themselves here: the tram is smelly...
not to mention the metro... very old buildings. I think Arad is a very beautiful town. And clean. When I was
there I didn't see a single sunflower seed on the ground or cigarettes thrown on the ground. And that was
really ok.

Q: What does beauty mean to you?
A: For me beauty doesn't mean only women or love. I find beauty in everything beautiful in itself: in a
beautiful scenery, in nature, even in music... any genre, but particularly classical music. Beauty is also
found in people, certain people, we don't necessarily need to think of beauty as a person that appears in
magazines, model or not. Beauty is also found in someone's way of thinking, in their behavior.
Q: Do you have a certain standard of beauty?
A: I don't have physical appearance as a standard, but the way of thinking. There was also a quote: Beauty
is not when you look at someone and you think they're beautiful, it's when you look in the same direction,
as far as your goals and way of thinking are concerned.
Q: Do you think Bucharest is a beautiful city?
A: I think it's beautiful, but it really starts to deteriorate because it is overpopulated. If we think at Bucharest
between wars, then yes, that was the flourishing period for the Capital.
Q: And what do you like about it now?
A: The cultural institutions such as the Athenaeum, The Museum of the Peasant, all these things that can
offer information, culture. Or, if I think about it, even this park where we are now, Cismigiu. Or anything
beautiful that is not overcrowded or oversaturated by people.

Frumusetea o
gasesti si în gândirea cuiva, în comportamentul cuiva.
Q: Ai un anumit standard de frumusete?
A: Nu pun ca standard fizicul, ci gândirea.

Q: What does beauty mean to you?
A: Beauty means spiritual beauty, not only the outer, physical beauty. Spiritual
beauty is more important to me. I don’t know, I value the inner side of a person
more than their exterior expression, which is now seen as a virtue, so to speak…
Q: Who stands as a beauty standard for you?
A: God, of course. There is no human being more beautiful than God or Virgin
Mary… And, of course, the people who serve Him and live their lives based on
Christian learnings.
Q: Do you see Bucharest as a beautiful city?
A: Yes, yes, a very beautiful one.
Q: Why?
A: Because it is a mixture of… good and a lot of kitsch, a great deal of it. But it has
always been a cultural center, for ages, and it is beautiful, I like it. I’m attracted to
it, although it is very tiresome for me at times.

R. Frumuse?ea înseamna frumuse?ea spirituala, nu neaparat frumuse?ea fizica
exterioara. Aceasta are o importan?a pentru mine.

Q: Why do you think it’s beautiful?
A: Because it has many beautiful buildings, beautiful parks.
Q: Do you like diversity, the fact that there are both old and new buildings?
A: Yes, especially the old buildings are very beautiful. And especially the Old
Town, there are some very beautiful buildings.
Q: Indeed. Well, I think this would be it.
A: Thank you.

O. Cine crede?i dumneavoastra ca-i o persoana frumoasa?
adevar, e foarte frumoasa.
O. Într-adevar, da.
R. Da, mai ales ca are ?i patru copii, ?i tot frumoasa e, da.
O. ?i slaba, ?i arata bine.
foarte frumoase.
O. De ce considera?i ca-i un ora? frumos?
R. Pentru ca are multe cladiri frumoase, parcuri frumoase.
O. Va place diversitatea, faptul ca sunt ?i blocuri, ?i cladiri vechi?
R. Da, în special ?i cladirile vechi sunt foarte frmoase. Mai ales Centrul Istoric,
acolo cladirile sunt foarte frumoase.
O. Într-adevar, da. Cred ca asta-i tot.
R. Mul?umesc.
